It all started a long long time ago...

1901 L Frank Baum, an author, first mentions the idea of an electronic display/spectacles that overlays data onto real life (in this case 'people') it is named a 'character marker'.

1966 Ivan Sutherland invents the head-mounted display and positions it as a window into a virtual world.

1990 the term "Augmented Reality" is believed to be attributed to Tom Caudell, a former Boeing researcher.

1992 Louis Rosenberg develops one of the first functioning AR systems, called Virtual Fixtures, at the US Air Force research laboratory-Armstrong, and demonstrates benefits to human performance.

2013 Wilkinson Marketing in Sheffield, South Yorkshire utilise the power of AR by use of the 'Layar' app to bring benefits to providers of printed products. A low cost medium whereby printed products such as Business Cards, Labels, Beermats, Advertisements, Packaging, Leaflets etc can be used to engage readers in a digital world combining digital and print together.

Over the last 5 years AR has developed considerably as the growth of new tablets and smartphones have hugely helped increase the availability of AR to users. AR is here to stay and will grow hugely.
